While having my holiday in New Zealand and Australia, I came to realize that NZ has this very understated vibe....and I kind of identify with that. We're kind of "just do it, prove it" rather than "blow your own trumpet" kind of people. I realize that even though I don't live there, I am somewhat influenced by this cultural trait also.
Growing up I have always had NZ Music played to me. Some of my favorites are: Dave Dobbyn Bic Runga Neil Finn and his older band Crowded House The Muttonbirds Lorde

![]() While thinking about my Personal Project one day, and my goal for it, I came to realize that being a TCK is my point of difference to many other aspiring musicians in the world. I’ve lived in New Zealand, Vietnam and Bangkok, so three different cultures and each have very different points of view. Being a TCK has helped me to become more open-minded, as I travel around a lot too. I realized that my life story is something unique and can help me be more known, and I should use to my advantage while creating my musical identity. While traveling around various places of the world, I have been exposed to many different cultures, and all that comes with that like music and mindset. Something else that widens my perspective about different cultures is going to an International School where there are so many different nationalities. While if I went to school in New Zealand I would be one out of a whole school of kiwis, in NIST I am the only New Zealander in the whole of my year group. My ATL self assessment can be found at this link: ATL Reflection
The first session that we had was with Ms. Teresa, about global contexts and ATL’s. The global context I have chosen is Personal and Cultural expression. I think that my global context is about expressing yourself and ways to do it, and this fits my topic perfectly, because my project is mainly based on something that I want to improve in. It doesn’t really involve other people as much as it’s about realizing things about myself. What are you trying to explore in GC? Personal and Cultural Expression - What is the nature and purpose of creative expression? Students will explore the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic (MYP Personal Project Guide 43). I have begun to explore this whole idea of me as a musician using an instagram account on which I post me playing guitar and singing. As I have gained a few more followers, I’ve realised that my decisions have become more deliberate about which videos I post, and what songs I choose. This decision making is really what I want to explore within this Global Context. How will I discover and express my ideas What do you currently understand about GC? Going into this project my understanding about this is mostly as a consumer of music. I notice how other artists know their style and know what they want to show about themselves through their music. In Mr. Jesse’s session, I learnt all about the hashtags, and how it can help me in the future while I am writing my report. After learning all this, I went through my journal entries and added in the appropriate hashtags. In this session, we also learnt about all the deadlines and the Personal Project as a whole. He showed us the big picture and important dates, which was very helpful for me. In Mr. Ian’s session, I started to explore that I already know about my topic, and what i don’t know. I used this to make some good research questions. I then turned the things that I didn't know into possible research questions. Prior Knowledge: - How to play the guitar - Steps to writing a song What do I know? Where does this knowledge come from? What have you learned from your myp courses that will help? Things I don’t know/ research questions: - What are the different possible types/genres of music? - How can you define your style in terms of music? What don't I know (sec/primary) Questions to lead to new understandings Promote challenging research IB Learner Profile Reflection One area I need to focus on is being a good #communicator. It is sometimes challenging for me to really clearly say what I mean, especially when I am being questioned about it. I sometimes feel like I have to give a certain answer, but I am beginning to realise this is my project and I am able to set the goals and the journey for myself. Because I love music, and listening to other musicians I am already somewhat #knowledgeable about aspects of my topic. I have never really complied this though, so I have to kind of sort through this knowledge and see which will be useful, or inspirational for me when I am developing my brand. I will need to be #reflective throughout this process. Not everything I realise about myself will be a strength and I will have to remember not to be too hard on myself. I have quite high standards when it comes to my music. I know some of my strengths already, such as my voice, being able to play guitar and some piano as well as recognising music that I like to listen to. I am going to try and stay #open-minded for as long as I can. I won’t make my final decisions until quite far into my process. I will aim to try different and unexpected ideas together and see if they work. I want to be open to even surprising myself. See ATL Reflection See Learner Profile Reflection
Your topic, goal, and global context and justifications for why you chose them I’ve gone and had my topic selection meeting with Mr. Jesse. In that meeting, I brought this very broad topic, which was that I wanted to sort of figure out who I am as an artist, so the aim of the meeting was to narrow down that to a specific topic. After throwing around quite a few ideas, we came to the conclusion that my goal for the Personal Project will be to express myself musically through original compositions and/or remixes and adaptations. I chose this because it keeps everything quite open. How I want to work towards that goal isn’t set in stone. Maybe it’s researching about different styles of music or how to remix a song. Maybe it’s learning more about songwriting, the possibilities are endless for me. I also chose this because I love music and I always want to know more about it. I wanted a chance to take all the skills I’ve learnt already and further them through a project. My global context I have chosen will be Personal and Cultural Expression, more specifically only personal expression, because my goal is based around me finding out who I am as a musician or artist and how I can express myself musically.
